ΤΙ ΕΙΝΑΙ Ο ΣΠΑΖ
Ο ΣΠΑΖ δημιουργήθηκε από μια ομάδα δασκάλων ιδιωτικού αγγλικού σχολείου των νοτίων προαστίων της Αθήνας το 1986.
Αφορμή ήταν ο θάνατος της Σάμμυ, της σκυλίτσας που είχε υιοθετήσει το 1984 το σχολείο όταν εμφανίστηκε και «ζητιάνευε» φαγητό και χάδια από τα παιδιά.
Αφού εμβολιάστηκε, στειρώθηκε και αποπαρασιτώθηκε, έγινε το κατοικίδιο του σχολείου. Είχε μαξιλάρι σε κάθε τάξη και κυκλοφορούσε ελεύθερα στο κτήριο και το προαύλιο. Έγινε η πιο ξεχωριστή δασκάλα όλων των παιδιών.
Όταν η Σάμμυ σκοτώθηκε από διερχόμενο αυτοκίνητο μπροστά στα μάτια τους, κάποιες δασκάλες αποφάσισαν ότι κάτι έπρεπε να κάνουν για να βοηθήσουν τα αδέσποτα. Να μειώσουν τον πληθυσμό τους, να διδάξουν τους ανθρώπους να σέβονται και να αγαπούν τα ζώα. Έτσι, στην μνήμη της Σάμμυ, μία ομάδα δασκάλων ίδρυσαν τον ΣΠΑΖ.
Εκείνα τα χρόνια η Γλυφάδα και οι γύρω περιοχές είχαν ΠΟΛΛΟΥΣ αδέσποτους σκύλους. Και επειδή δεν ήταν στειρωμένοι κυκλοφορούσαν σε αγέλες και, φυσικά, πολλαπλασιάζονταν.
Βασικός στόχος ήταν – και είναι – να στειρωθούν όσο το δυνατόν περισσότερα αδέσποτα ζώα (σκύλοι και γάτες).
Στα 32 χρόνια δράσης, οι εθελοντές του ΣΠΑΖ έχουν στειρώσει πάνω από 30.000 αδέσποτα. Η πρώτη ομάδα εθελοντών ήταν κυρίως Αμερικανοί, Καναδοί, Άγγλοι, Νοτιοαφρικάνοι, Αυστραλοί, Γερμανοί. Άνθρωποι με κοινό όραμα, κοινό στόχο, υπομονή, επιμονή, πλάνο δράσης και όρεξη για δουλειά.
Εθελοντές με όλη τη σημασία της λέξης, καταλάβαιναν την ανάγκη της συνεχούς δράσης, ήταν σταθεροί στη προσφορά τους και στήριζε ο ένας τον άλλον. Χωρίς αυτούς ο ΣΠΑΖ δεν θα υπήρχε.
Οι περισσότεροι έχουν πια αποσυρθεί. Ελπίζουμε ότι αυτή η πρώτη ομάδα παρακολουθεί την δράση μας και είναι υπερήφανη για εμάς, γιατί καταφέρνουμε και συνεχίζουμε αυτό που με πολλή αγάπη, αφοσίωση και κόπο ξεκίνησαν εκείνοι πριν από 32 χρόνια.
Από το 2015 «τρέχουμε» και ένα πολύ σημαντικό εκπαιδευτικό πρόγραμμα σε σχολεία, το οποίο χρηματοδοτεί η Dogs Trust. Η Νίκη Κλαϊνού, υπεύθυνη του προγράμματος, εκπαιδεύτηκε στο Λονδίνο από την Dogs Trust. Το πρόγραμμά μας «Πατούσες στο σχολείο» θα το έχουν παρακολουθήσει έως τον Ιούνιο του 2019 πάνω από 10.000 παιδιά. Τα παιδιά είναι το μέλλον. Τα παιδιά, αν έχουν τη σωστή πληροφόρηση/αν λάβουν τις σωστές πληροφορίες, θα είναι καλύτεροι άνθρωποι σε όλα τα επίπεδα.
Η οικονομική κρίση που περνάει η χώρα μας τα τελευταία χρόνια έχει επηρεάσει σημαντικά τα ζώα – αδέσποτα και δεσποζόμενα. Πολλές οι εγκαταλείψεις, λιγότεροι οι εθελοντές και οι υποστηρικτές.
Τα αδέσποτα ζώα σας χρειάζονται. Ο ΣΠΑΖ σας χρειάζεται. Χρειάζεται ανθρώπους που θα προσφέρουν τον χρόνο τους και την ενέργειά τους για να συνεχίσουμε όλοι μαζί να βοηθάμε τα αδέσποτα. Χρειάζεται και αυτούς που δεν έχουν χρόνο αλλά μπορούν να βοηθήσουν οικονομικά. Όλοι από λίγο, αντί όλα από λίγους. Έχουμε καταφέρει πολλά, αλλά έχουμε πολλά να κάνουμε ακόμα.

Οι εθελοντές του ΣΠΑΖ
SPAZ (Society for the Protection of Stray Animals) was created and founded by a group of teachers at a private school in the southern suburbs of Athens in 1986.
It all began with the death of Sammy, a dog that was adopted in 1984, by the school after she appeared, begging for food and hugs from the children. After being de-wormed, vaccinated and neutered, she officially became the school pet. She had a cushion in each classroom and roamed around freely throughout the school buildings and playground. She was the BEST teacher in so many ways!
When Sammy was hit and killed by a car, in front of the children, some of the teachers decided that something needed to be done to help the stray animals, in Sammy’s memory. They needed to control the population by neutering as well as teach people to respect and love animals – the way Sammy taught everyone at school. That is how, in memory of Sammy, a group of teachers founded SPAZ.
In the 1980’s Glyfada and the surrounding areas had many stray dogs. As they were not neutered, they would go around in packs and naturally their numbers just multiplied. So, the main aim of SPAZ was – and still is – neutering.
Over the last 32 years SPAZ volunteers have managed to get over 30,000 stray animals neutered.
In the early years of SPAZ, the volunteers were mainly Americans, Canadians, British, South Africans, Australians and Germans. These were all people with a common vision, a common goal, patience, perseverance, a plan, AND the will to work. They were VOLUNTEERS in every sense of the word. These volunteers understood the need for constant work. They were consistent in their contribution and they supported one another. Without them, SPAZ would not exist.
Most of the original group are no longer active. We hope that members of the original group are following us proudly, seeing the continuation of the work they started with such passion, so many years ago.
Since 2015, we have been running a very important school educational programme, funded by Dogs Trust. Nikki Clainos, head of the programme called “Paw-Prints in School”, was trained by Dogs Trust in London. By June 2019 over 10.000 children will have attended the programme. Children are our future and if they have received the correct information they will be better people in all levels of society. The economic crisis that Greece has endured over the last few years has not only affected the people, but also the animals – both strays and pets. There are many abandoned animals, but nowhere near as many volunteers and supporters/sponsors.
The stray animals need you. SPAZ needs you. People are needed to volunteer their time and energy to help SPAZ continue the work they are doing with the strays. We also need people who can help financially. A little from everyone instead of a lot from a few. We have accomplished so much, but we still have so much more to do!
