Mario is one of those dogs that some people considered “useless.” He wasn’t suitable for guarding, hunting, or protection. His only “fault” was that he didn’t want to be aggressive. So they abandoned him on the mountain, alone and helpless.
But someone didn’t pass him by. They gave him a plate of food, a gentle touch, a bit of attention. That’s how we learned about him.
Mario was a calm and sociable little dog. And that was exactly what made him incompatible with the harsh dogs of the mountain.
On one of the daily visits to feed him, they found him in a terrible condition. He had more than 30 bite wounds all over his body, simply because he was looking for food. And yet, he was still standing there, at his spot. Waiting. As if he knew someone would come. As if he knew he would be saved.
Today, Mario has left all that behind. He is safe. He has his own bed, companionship, and friends. He is an incredibly social and happy dog who loves cuddles, human presence, playtime, and other dogs.
We watch him every day and feel deeply moved. Because if we hadn’t seen with our own eyes the condition he was in, we would never believe that a creature who went through so much could have such a beautiful soul.
