“Fox”… That was his name.
We didn’t have to guess it. It was written on the tag still hanging from his collar when he was found.
Next to his name was a phone number.
We called it.
We hoped someone had lost their dog and would rush to embrace him.
That never happened.
From that moment on, we realized Fox hadn’t been lost.
He had been abandoned.
Over the years, hundreds of dogs have passed through our hands. Most come from lives of abuse, chains, hunger, and fear. And when they arrive at the shelter, they usually feel relieved. It’s often the first time they’ve experienced safety.
Fox was different.
It was one of the very few times we felt that an animal was grieving.
He didn’t cry.
He didn’t bark.
He simply… waited.
He would sit quietly, staring at the gate. He barely touched his food, as if he believed he would soon be going back home to eat there. Every sound made him lift his head with hope.
And we watched him…
Waiting for people who had already decided they would never come back.
Until one day, he stopped waiting.
That was the hardest day of all.
Because he understood.
He realized that no one was coming for him.
It took time for him to find himself again.
Today, Fox is a wonderful dog. Every morning he eagerly waits to see us, hoping for a cuddle and excited for his walk. He adores people, gets along wonderfully with female dogs, is clean in his kennel, and has a truly exceptional personality.
He didn’t let abandonment make him bitter.
He chose to keep loving.
And perhaps that’s what hurts the most.
Because a dog who was once not enough for someone is now everything to us.
And we, in return, will make sure he finds the loving home he truly deserves.
